To what or whom are you testifying with your life?
“Come, see…” (John 4:29)
Or, in our vernacular, we would say “hey, you really need to check this out!” “This was my experience and I found it pretty amazing, so you have to try it too!”
I have a testimony about the “Superman Experience” at Six-Flags Magic Mountain. I have only ridden this ride once. And, once was enough to make a true believer out of me. A believer of what? The truth regarding the extreme-ness of this ride. For me, it was very nerve wracking, intense, white knuckling, teeth grinding, stomach turning and hair raising (did I mention pure terror?). If you are afraid of the unknown, I do not suggest you venture onto this ride. Most rides at Six-Flags are displayed in all their twisting, turning and looping glory for you to observe and decide if you, too, want to defy gravity and be pushed and pulled to the point of losing the really yummy “Dippin’ Dots” you consumed 30 minutes before braving the ride. The Superman Experience is not wholly revealed to those inquiring about this ride: for good reason. Had I seen how they sit you down, strap you in and then…well, let’s just say, I’m certain I now know how a bullet feels upon being fired from the secure, dark, homey confines of a gun chamber. The phrase “faster than a speeding bullet” has a whole new meaning to me. Had I seen all of this first, I would have declined to go from zero to 60 mph in a matter of 0.003 seconds just to catch up to Superman hovering, smiling, gleaming with evil delight over the end of the track.
But hey, that was MY experience. Believe my experience, or go and see for yourself.
This morning, I read about another’s testimony and it prompted me to take you on this roller-coaster-journey. However, the one I want to recommend is far more satisfying (eternally speaking) and thrilling for everyday living.
The event of the woman at the well is found in John 4:5-42. This woman is a sinner in need of a Savior. And, Messiah is resting at the well asking her for a drink of water. First off, He tells her about Himself. In verse 10, …“If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.” So, the woman is confused and focused on the detail that Jesus doesn’t have a bucket to draw water from the well. Then He says, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again; but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life” (vss. 13-14). She didn’t understand what He was saying. So, as Dr. Ryrie puts it, “Because the woman did not understand the meaning of “living water” the Lord turned the conversation toward showing her her need as a sinner.” You can read the passage. It is pretty amazing. In verse 25, the woman says “I know Messiah is coming (He who is called Christ); when that One comes, he will declare all things to us.” My heart always does a flip flop when I read vs. 26, “Jesus said to her, ‘I who speak to you am He.” Right here, Jesus is affirming that He IS the Messiah!
This woman drops what she is doing (pursuing a physical need, to get water), runs back to her village and tells everyone about Jesus. People from her village believed in Jesus “because of the word of the woman who testified, ‘He told me all the things that I have done’” (vs. 39). Then, it gets even better! Jesus stays there for two days and many more Samaritans “believed because of His word; and they were saying to the woman, ‘It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves and know that this One is indeed the Savior of the world’” (vss. 41-42).
Psalm 34:8 “O taste and see that the LORD is good; how blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!”
Like this woman, you and I have a testimony for Jesus Christ! Are you living out the Gospel in your everyday life?
Romans 1:16 “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.”
1 Peter 3:13-17 “Who is there to harm you if you prove zealous for what is good? But even if you should suffer for the sake of righteousness, you are blessed. AND DO NOT FEAR THEIR INTIMIDATION, AND DO NOT BE TROUBLED, but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence; and keep a good conscience so that in the thing in which you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ will be put to shame. For it is better, if God should will it so, that you suffer for doing what is right rather than for doing what is wrong.”
Does your life say to your friends, family, acquaintances, “Come, see…”? To whom are you inviting them to come and see? Are they seeing you or Christ?
