Ode to Dustbunnies...

I think that I shall never see

a thing as hideous as a dustbunny

it waits, it lurks, beneath your bed

it makes you sneeze

and hurt your head!

What once was cute

is now a dread

those plague prone bunnehs

beneath my bed

Never move or you will see

the nasty, dirty dustbunny

once they are here,

they are every where

they especially like to stick

and tickle your delicate nose hair(s)

I am tired, and this rhyme is sad

suffice it to say, once cute...

I now find dustbunnies, bad!

My mother is a vivid dreamer! There is actually a medical condition for folks who dream such vivid dreams where it affects their health: sleeping habits, neurological issues, blood pressure, etc. Apparently, my mom doesn't qualify for this medical condition...but she is close! Growing up, it was not uncommon for my mom to let out this blood curdling scream in the middle of the night - due to having pepperoni on her pizza. My poor father! I guess when they were first married (ahem, 1952) my mom used to wake my dad up in the dead of night and tell him there was her grandpa/man/killer (it varied depending on her meal that evening) standing at the foot of their bed. Shortly after Frank and I started dating, my mom ripped a real good scream one evening whilst Frank and I were watching a movie late at night. I ignored it. Frank was quite calm, but then turned to me and asked if my mom was okay? I explained the history (see above).

My dad doesn't dream (or, um, er, he never remembers dreaming). My sister, who is 5 years my senior, talks in her sleep and explains they need to cash a check with the can-opener (!!???). Will have to investigate and see how her nights are going and if she dreams (and remembers them).

Jameson talks in his sleep. A lot! When he took naps as a little boy, he used to appear to wake up and would be crying/yelling (thanks mom!)/or laughing heartily. I would go and comfort/check him, only to discover, he was dreaming and not really waking up. Sometimes I'd sit there and watch him to be sure. He would settle back down and his little face would show a myriad of emotions. It was always amazing to me when this happened.

Sometimes, Frank will talk in his sleep. And, he dreams. Somewhere along the avenues of our relationship, he got this idea I could interpret dreams. All I've ever said is that dreams are a reflection of your emotional state at the time. Water in your dream usually reflects (no pun intended) emotions. That's about all I remember from my counseling psychology days in college. And, people in your dreams...they represent parts of your personality. Usually. Mostly, your dreams are not about those people...but about what bits and pieces of your personal self they represent. Got that? No worry, it will come to you.

I really hope I'm not taking after my mom! Frank says I giggle in my sleep. That's harmless right?

Don't you hate it when you have a particular recurring dream...and it isn't good?

I used to have this dream (as a 25+ year old adult), over several years, where I found myself back in high school (at an adult age) and having to repeat some courses or being told I didn't have enough credits to graduate! Once I completed my B.A. degree, that dream went away!

After we lost our home, I started having this dream where we would go back to this house which was connected to an older, victorian house, which was way haunted. In the back yard was this split-level field area with a wading pool on the first level and an olympic size swimming pool on the bottom level. The gist of the dream is usually to get through the haunted house to the back yard to go swimming. Different variations have different haunted happenings. The wading pool is always murky, green and a tad mosquito invested. Everyone wants to go in that pool! The second pool is always pristine, crystal clear and very inviting...but very deep. I always want to get to that pool, but the people I am with are content to muck around in the disgusting pool. And, in my dreams, I know the house is haunted that I'm going through. I'm not afraid. Ever. If anyone, other than Frank, Bill or Debbie is with me in the dream, they are always freaked out and hurt/harrassed by the house. Just had a variation of this dream a few weeks ago! It is a fascinating dream to me...not sure what it says about me.

Lately, I've had the rapture dream. Maybe you've never had this dream, but if you do, you'll be able to commiserate. My first variation of this dream was quite startling! I recall I knew I was going to the guillotine to die for my faith in Christ. My only two concerns were, would my family be okay and would the actual chopping off of my head hurt!? What is really funny about this dream is I was an asian man in this dream. But, it was me. How strange is that? I vividly remember placing my head on the half-circle of the guillotine and holding my hands behind my back. Just as they were about to release the blade of death, I put out my hands and yelled, "wait!" I was asked if I were recanting my faith in Jesus and I replied "no." I indicated I wanted to know about my family and if they were okay. They told me to reject Jesus and I would find out. I recall saying, "no," and praying God would help me give up control, give me courage. I then had peace and then the blade came down and I woke up very suddenly!

Monday morning I awoke from a terrifying dream. The rapture had taken place and I was left behind. A dear friend was in my dream and I kept asking what did all this mean. Their response was, "you doofus, we obviously weren't saved." This is the worst kind of dream to have!

What does all this mean? I have no clue. But, I do know God has a lot to say about what we think, dwell upon and worry about. It takes no professional degree to draw some conclusions about my dreams and stress or anxiety in my life.

Here is what God says:
"The steadfast of mind You will keep in perfect peace, Because he trusts in You." (Isaiah 26:3)

"Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things." (Philippians 4:6-8)

"Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, so that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace, because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so, and those who are in the flesh cannot please God." (Romans 8:1-8)

Pretty awesome, don't you think!?

Next time you have a bad dream...turn to the Lord for comfort. And, you might try memorizing some verses! In the deep dark hours, awakened from a bad dream, they are a comfort and Truth!

A Sinful Twilight

Okay, I’ve been deliberating for about a week or two about this post to my blog.

Last May, a few of us went to see Prince Caspian. Cayla was along, sitting next to me, and shivered with excitement over this trailer for an unknown movie (to me) called “Twilight.” She gleefully explained the movie was from a series (4) of books by author, Stephanie Meyer. She said she really enjoyed them and that I should check them out!

Fast-forward to the end of August, and indeed, I have “checked” them out. All four of them to be precise: Twilight, Red Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn. These books will go on my list of “guilty pleasure” reading material.

I find it interesting that some of Cayla’s friends have refused to read these books. I haven’t gotten around to asking her why, but I plan to.

Stephanie Meyer does an interesting job of juggling teenage angst and vampire/werewolf adverse relationships. I won’t spoil any of the details but, I can see the appeal of this book to teenaged gals (and a few guys as well!). I’ve been trying to get Frank to read the series, but he won’t touch it.

There is a lot of unreal romantic situations between a 90+ year old 17-year old appearing vampire (Edward) and a human 17-year old teenaged girl: Bella (short for Isabella). But, I got over that and enjoyed the story. What I REALLY liked about this series is how the author deals with relationships and moral values (like waiting for marriage to have sex, etc.).

If you understand that this is a fantasy book about human/vampire, human/werewolf, human/vampire/werewolf, and, ‘good’ vampires vs. ‘bad’ vampires relationships you can check your reasoning at the cover and dive into a romantic/fantasy novel.

I do have to confess, I am looking forward to seeing the movie when it comes out in November (especially since Harry Potter has been delayed!).

If you’ve read the books, I’d like to read your comments.

Dare2Share also did a great job of tying in the conversations you can have with your friends surrounding the “Twilight” series.

Here’s what they had to say:

It started when I noticed that a ton of flair on Facebook started to show up with the word ‘Twilight'. And not only ‘Twilight' - but others like ‘I heart Twilight' - and ‘I want to be a Cullen when I grow up'.

So where have I been since 2005? Apparently missing a highly popular and extremely anticipated movie based on the Twilight novel. Essentially a forbidden romance story with supernatural twists and turns as good vs. evil takes the vampire stage.

If you check out the cover of the book, you'll see two hands that are cupped and holding an apple. So why that image and not vampires? Well according to Wikipedia, Stephenie Meyer used an apple to exemplify the forbidden fruit as referenced in Genesis 2:17. The fruit represents Edward and Bella's forbidden love just as the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil in the Garden of Eden was forbidden to Adam and Eve. Meyer also states that the apple represents choice.

In case you're wondering, Genesis 2:17 reads this way:
…but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.

These are the words from God - giving a command and a warning. The command is not to eat the fruit produced by the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The warning is that if Adam and Eve (the first humans on earth) did, they would die.

In other words, just like today, there are choices and consequences. Each and every day we wake up and choose life or death in the little and big things we think, do, and say.
So why would anyone choose death? Well, let's check out why Adam and Eve made that choice and brought death and destruction to the entire planet:

The serpent was the shrewdest of all the wild animals the L ord God had made. One day he asked the woman, “Did God really say you must not eat the fruit from any of the trees in the garden?”

“Of course we may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,” the woman replied. “It's only the fruit from the tree in the middle of the garden that we are not allowed to eat. God said, ‘You must not eat it or even touch it; if you do, you will die.'”

“You won't die!” the serpent replied to the woman. “God knows that your eyes will be opened as soon as you eat it, and you will be like God, knowing both good and evil.”
The woman was convinced. She saw that the tree was beautiful and its fruit looked delicious, and she wanted the wisdom it would give her. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it, too. (Genesis 3:1-6).

Incredible, isn't it? God gave Adam and Eve complete freedom with only one responsibility - don't eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. And what is even more amazing is that they already knew what was good. The only thing they had to gain by disobeying God was…

Evil

So again - why did they choose that? Easy - same reason we choose evil and death as well. Satan tempted Eve by telling a lie combined with a half-truth:

“You won't die!” the serpent replied to the woman. “God knows that your eyes will be opened as soon as you eat it, and you will be like God, knowing both good and evil.”
First - the lie: You won't die.

Second - the half-truth: You will be like God.

That one-two punch convinced Eve - and what previously looked evil now looked ‘delicious' - and she bought the lie that knowing evil would be a good thing.
Sound familiar? You know what I'm talking about:

First - the lie: Sin won't cost you a thing.

Second - the half-truth: A sinful lifestyle has certain pleasures you aren't currently experiencing.

Of course, what Satan leaves out of that truth is that with every ounce of pleasure is a pound of pain when you reap the consequences of a guilty heart and a broken world.
Next time your heart tells you to pursue forbidden choices with deadly consequences - listen to this truth instead:

The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure. (1 Corinthians 10:13).

You always have a choice - no matter how delicious sin looks or how convinced you are that God is somehow keeping you from what life has to offer.

Life apart from following Christ offers only death - and God has only forbidden the things that will ultimately destroy you.

Compared to vampires, sin is infinitely more powerful and deadly…but you have a choice.

For your sake, please choose wisely!

Head: What you need to know about this truth
Sin is a powerful and destructive force that we can choose to resist.

Heart: What you need to feel about this truth
Think through what damage sin has already done to your life, and how much pain and scarring it has left on your soul. Remembering these things is a great way to resist temptation in the future.

Hands: What you need to do about this truth
Jot down the areas/circumstances that drag you into sin most often, and then develop a plan of resistance that keep you from repeating the wrong choices.
